How Modular Classrooms Can Help Special Education Needs

Schools and educational facilities need to be accessible to all children whatever their needs and must accommodate the varying disabilities and demands of children across the full spectrum of special educational needs.

Flexibility is therefore essential and facilities for alternative types of learning are critical additions to any educational space.

There are four main types of learning requiring focused attention:

Cognitive

Children with certain disabilities may require practical sensory or physical experiences to support the development of abstract ideas and concepts.

Behavioural, emotional, and social

Children who have these needs may require a more structured learning environment, with clear boundaries for each activity and additional space to move around.

Communication and interaction

The sensory stimulus should be incorporated to reduce anxiety levels. Children with these considerations may also benefit from having access to a safe place to calm down.

Sensory and physical

These may require special acoustic and lighting conditions. In addition to specialist aids, there may need to be some may need extra space and signposting.

Springfield has been the front runner in the development of modular buildings designed for special education needs and introduced innovative facilities to increase accessibility, flexible learning, and specialist equipment.

As our buildings are bespoke, we can include any special requirements you may need on top of the wide range we have introduced. If you can imagine it, we can create it.

Beyond the aesthetic of the building and standard features, we can also offer practical considerations which can be beneficial to SEN learning.

Sensory elements

Sensory elements include specialised lighting, acoustics, and materials. We can provide solar tinted windows, lighting proven to enhance learning and electronically controlled roof skylights with automated ventilation management and rain sensors.

Health and wellbeing

Health and wellbeing facilities include areas for washing, toilet use and safety. We have roller blinds with anti-ligature mechanisms to prevent accidents, soft-close doors to stop fingers from getting trapped, anti-scald taps, wheelchair-accessible showers and wet rooms, door & window finger guards and low-level toilets and height-adjustable washbasins.

Spacious but safe

Having adequate space for accessible space is essential. There are several types of disabilities that benefit from having additional space, including but not limited to wheelchair users. We can provide wheelchair and buggy-friendly facilities throughout the building, and access control on external doors.

Separate zones for different needs

Depending on the needs of the students this may include intervention rooms, sensory rooms, therapy rooms or even first aid facilities.

Access to the outdoors

There are considerable benefits to outdoor play and learning. Our buildings can feature easy open doors, accessible ramps, and canopies for protection from changing weather conditions.

Again, the options don’t end there. If you have special requirements but think it can’t be done, ask first because we may just find a way. Springfield we have a reputation for finding solutions where others see problems, and we have a passion for creating exactly what our customers need.
