PROJECT:
12 Bay modular to provide Alternative Resource Provision comprising; 2 classrooms, pupil toilets and disabled toilet along with dining room.
CLIENT DETAILS:
Mead Primary School is a community school in Romford accommodating 675 local children aged 3-11. Ofsted rated “Good” with reading, writing & maths all judged as “above average” or “well above average.” It is a highly regarded school and very much in demand by the local population in need of additional classroom space.
OVERVIEW:
The school needed to offer an Alternative Resource Provision to accommodate a number of children in a safe secure environment. Originally it was assumed the building would be a traditional brick build but the major advantages of a modular build proved compelling given the massive savings in time & cost over a traditional build. The knowledge that the units would be constructed off-site, reducing the obvious dangers of mixing children with construction sites, further strengthened the case. Finally, being able to take delivery within 4 months of placing the order proved conclusive and Mead proceeded to tender accordingly using their appointed contractor T&B Contractors of St Albans to source a suitable supplier. Springfield were identified amongst others as having the required competence to provide a highly bespoke building and satisfy several demanding choices in specifications. Following a robust tender process Springfield were chosen to produce the building with an order to proceed in January 2019 and deliver in April 2019.
KEY ISSUES FACED BY CLIENT:
The new building needed to link to the existing traditionally built school building meaning it was crucial that the external finishes matched the current building. The new building also had to match a variable roof height in the existing building and offer this split level roof structure, fairly unique in modular construction. The school were also keen to acquire the building urgently as it was already oversubscribed.
WHATSPRINGFIELD DID:
Following confirmation as the chosen supplier and the granting of planning permission, Springfield appointed Keith Hynes, our dedicated senior technical project manager to supervise the project. Keith’s role was to provide a single point of contact and manage the project from start to finish, provide the necessary technical advice required on this high spec. job and ensure Springfield’s on time on budget service levels. We commenced work in Jan 2019. The nature of the resource dictated the need for upgraded internal specifications including heavy duty plasterboard to provide increased impact resistance and sound proofing to a 35db rating The installation also offers fresh-air systems, electric roof skylights with automated ventilation management and rain sensors along with finger protection on the doors, aluminium windows to match existing building and a high spec. fitted kitchen. Externally the units were matched to the existing building through a mixture of K-rend and Cedar Cladding and matched roof height.
SUMMARY & KEY BENEFITS:
Mead Primary School have taken delivery of a building designing specifically to their detailed specifications perfect for their demanding requirements within 4 months of placing the order with T&B/Springfield. Selecting a modular choice has delivered considerable savings in both time and money and ensured the school’s children were not exposed to the danger of lengthy on-site construction work. The building will provide a superb, secure learning environment for their children with the upgraded facilities taking advantage of progress being made in the educational sector. The building is aesthetically pleasing, environmentally friendly, energy efficient and a complete match for the existing inked building to which it is linked.
