Hesketh Bank 12 Bay Community Centre

PROJECT:   To replace an existing Community Centre building with 12 modular bays to create 200m sq. single-storey construction providing three multi-purpose rooms with a folding partition to create a fourth room when required, along with a bar, social meeting area, kitchen, and toilets.

CLIENT DETAILS: 

Hesketh Bank Community Centre was founded on the 26th of April 1944 and was established to provide a focal point for the well-being of residents and was supported by the Parish Council and recreational and sports clubs in Hesketh Bank at the time. They were gifted the plot of land on which the Community Centre now stands, with the ambition of building a multi-purpose hall. The establishment became a registered charity on the 18th of November 1963. Along with the Front Hall built in 1964, an additional timber-framed building - the Back Hall - was added in 1984 which became the Community Centre's main hall. Over the years the Back Hall has been used as a Day Nursery, Youth Club and Library amongst many other activities.

OVERVIEW:

In 2019 Hesketh Bank Community Centre celebrated its 75th birthday and was actively campaigning for funds to redevelop the site, to ensure that it would be able to continue to support the residents of the ‘Northern Parishes’ of Hesketh Bank, Tarleton and Banks for many years to come.

In October 2020, having secured the significant funding required for a brand new, twenty-first-century building, the initial stage of the Community Centre’s redevelopment began with the demolition of the back hall and a clear vision of what was required in the new facility.

Following previous discussions with Springfield, over a period of time, the possibilities of modular building were considered. Discovering the many options available to them prompted a number of revisions and plan changes in collaboration with Springfield. Once funding was confirmed to allow the purchase of the desired building the Trustees went out to tender, and Springfield were selected as the best choice to deliver the building on time and on budget.

KEY ISSUES FACED BY CLIENT:

The building is used for many purposes meaning space needed to be flexible with rooms of different sizes to accommodate the different activities. Toilet facilities were of course a must along with a bar and professional kitchen for the regular functions held at the premises. Keith Hynes, our Project & Technical Manager was able to take them to a similar recently completed project at Newcastle-u-Lyme Baptist Church to provide a few ideas about the use of space and a sliding partition was adopted in the Hesketh Bank Community Centre building after establishing its usefulness at the Church building. The final decision was to create 3 rooms with the partitioning option creating a fourth room when necessary.

Springfield worked with the Hesketh Bank Community Centre Trustees over a four-year period to explain the massive range of choice available in Springfield buildings and illustrate and cost a number of different plans and finishes. We were able to provide a visit to a similar site with similar needs to help make the final decisions on their building. The Springfield turn-key option was chosen by Hesketh Bank Community Centre and following demolition and removal arranged by the Trustees, Springfield took control over all the groundworks required and organised the installation and connection of all the utilities including electric and water. The 12 units were constructed in our St Helens production facility and delivered to the site and installed over a 6-week period, a fraction of the time it would have taken for a traditional build.

SUMMARY & KEY BENEFITS:

Hesketh Bank Community Centre now has a building which they designed and is perfect for their needs offering the flexibility to accommodate a wide range of activities in space designed to be fit for purpose. They enjoy all the support facilities for catering and functions whatever they may. Finally, selecting the turnkey option removed any potential for delay and unwarranted cost by appointing Springfield to manage the project including all groundworks, utilities, and site preparation.
