How Long Does It Take to Build a Modular Classroom?

As the demand for additional learning space continues to rise, modular construction provides a quick and cost-effective solution that meets the needs of modern schools while promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility.

This article outlines the modular classroom construction process from start to finish so you can get an idea of how long it would take to have a brand-new building in your school.

The Process of Modular Construction Explained

Modular construction involves the off-site fabrication of building modules in a factory, which are then transported to the site and assembled into a complete building structure. Below, we have outlined the step-by-step process a customer of ours would go through to design their modular classroom from beginning to end.

Step 1: Consultation

The first step involves meeting with a member of our team who will assess your school’s specific needs, including the number of classrooms required, size, and functionality. Your dedicated point of contact will take the time to get to know you and understand what we need to do to accommodate your needs and fully exceed your expectations.

Customisation options will also be discussed during the consultation meeting. One of the greatest advantages of modular classrooms is that they are completely customisable. Choose from sustainable building finishes such as reclaimed wood cladding and energy-efficient optional extras such as solar panels and automatic windows.

Step 2: Planning and Design

Following your consultation, one of our planners will create detailed designs for your future modular classroom. During this phase, our planner will ensure the design complies with relevant building regulations and meets your school’s specific requirements.

Step 3: Review and Approve

After completing the design phase, you will meet with your planner to view the final designs. These visuals illustrate what your future modular classroom will look like, giving you a real idea of how your building will look and feel.

Amends might be made at this stage depending on your thoughts and feelings about the design. If you feel like your new classroom’s design needs tweaking, we will keep amending the design until you are completely happy and ready to approve.

Step 4: Factory Construction

Once the design is finalised, our team will begin the construction of modules in our factory in St. Helens. This includes building the structural framework of each module using steel and timber and applying exterior cladding and roofing materials to protect the modules from weather elements. Once each module is complete, it will undergo rigorous quality checks to ensure it meets the specified standards and regulations.

Groundwork preparation occurs concurrently while the modules are being constructed in the factory. This involves laying foundations, ranging from concrete slabs to piers, depending on the site conditions and design specifications. On-site staff will also ensure that all necessary utilities, such as water, electricity, and sewage systems, are in place.

Step 5: Transportation to the Site

When the groundworks and modules are completed and signed off, the modules are transported from the factory to the construction site using specialised vehicles. This step requires careful planning to minimise disruption and ensure safe delivery.

Step 6: On-Site Assembly

Once the modules arrive on-site, they are lifted into place using cranes. The assembly process includes aligning and securing the modules onto the foundation and then joining the modules together, ensuring structural integrity and seamless integration.

At this stage, your new modular classroom is almost ready!

Step 7: Finishing Touches

Once your new modular classroom is in position and fully assembled, we will complete any final touches, such as internal finishes, connecting utilities, and installing fixtures and fittings.

Step 8: Sign-Off

Finally, we will conduct a thorough inspection to ensure the building meets all regulatory standards and is ready for use. Now, the building is ready to use.

How Long Does It Take to Build a Modular Classroom?

In summary, a modular classroom can be constructed from start to finish in as little as two weeks. However, this is subject to project requirements, building size and specification, and the factory’s lead times.

Modular classroom construction offers a quick, cost-effective, and sustainable solution for expanding school learning space. The streamlined process, from design and factory fabrication to on-site assembly, allows schools to rapidly accommodate growing pupil numbers without compromising quality.
